A number of mentoring and tutoring opportunities are available through a housing organization serving low-income individuals and families. Locations and times vary at each housing complex.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Kansas City

Serve as a mentor through the YouthFriends program. You will serve in a variety of roles, such as The Kauffman Scholars program is a collaborative effort with a nationally-recognized community-based program matching children with caring adult mentors. The program is a comprehensive multi-year program designed to provide student who would not otherwise have a chance to go to college and the opportunity for a full scholarship. Volunteers are currently being recruited to mentor and befriend high school students enrolled in the program who will be first-generation college students in their families.

Mentors are needed for a South Kansas City based organization dedicated to providing help for children and youth ages 11-17 and their families who are experiencing emotional problems and learning difficulties. You will be matched with one of the youth based on interests, and will work closely with the staff therapists and youth care staff to help them through the recovery process.

Be a reader friend. Volunteer to read with preschool children and after-school children in the library. Preschoolers nap from noon - 3:00 pm, so any other time between 6:00 am - 6:00 pm.
Blue Springs Family Literacy Center

A division of Blue Springs School District seeks volunteers to serve as guest readers to the children, and encourage reading in the home. Other opportunities include rocking babies and reading picture books to them. You will work with children six weeks to six years old. Orientation and training is provided.
Reach Out and Read

Help Kansas City area children develop a love for reading by volunteering to read to them in the waiting rooms of pediatric clinics. Volunteers must be at least 14 years old and able to commit 1-2 hours one day a week Monday-Friday. You must be comfortable being in the company of children and comfortable reading aloud. Training will be provided.

Have a desire to work in the classroom? A nationally-recognized organization that recruits business volunteers to teach students state-approved, age-appropriate hands-on lessons about financial literacy, workplace readiness and entrepreneurship seeks over 100 volunteers to teach K-12th grade curruiculum in area school districts. You must be at least 18 years old and available one hour a week for 5 weeks, morning or afternoon hours during the school day.

An organization championing the healthy development of children has an ongoing opportunity for two volunteers at their Choteau Court location in Northeast Kansas City. Volunteers will lead the Family Empowerment after-school program from 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Duties include tutoring and directing arts and crafts projects.

A classroom facilitator is needed for an organization geared toward building the self-esteem and talents of young women in the urban core. Duties include creating life skills curriculum for one of three age groups. Teaching experience is required. Weekday evening and weekday morning hours are available.
