The United Ways of Greater Kansas City and Wyandotte County, along with a steering committee comprised of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, the FDIC, area financial institutions, city government and non-profit leaders announced the kick-off of Bank on Save Up Kansas City in June 2011. The Bank on Save Up Kansas City initiative aims to connect residents, primarily low- and moderate-income families, who are currently unbanked, underbanked or non-savers to safe, affordable, "mainstream" financial products and services while creating a culture of savings throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area. Multiple financial institutions, representing the entire Kansas City metropolitan area will offer low-cost checking and savings products, along with financial education. Five area nonprofits will also provide financial education to any who is interested.
